How To Get Back In Communication With Your Physical Body [Guest Post: Melissa Opie]

Hello folks! Today we have a guest post by the lovely Melissa Opie. It is called: How To Get Back In Communication With Your Physical BodyI absolutely love this article, it’s something I needed to read myself! A lot of energy workers tend to keep up with their energy, but forget to stay in communication with their physical bodies too.  This is a beautiful gentle reminder that we are currently physical beings and we need to stay connected with our bodies as well. I hope you enjoy How To Get Back In Communication With Your Physical Body as much as I did!

I love to play with energy. Really, I do. I wish I was better at it. Energy healing doesn’t come naturally for me. I am fascinated by it though and I always feel like I’m watching magic happen for the first time.

Let me share something with you:

You know those little girls that love to dance and say things like, “I want to be a ballerina”? Well, that was me. The funny thing is, I don’t even have a memory of asking my mom. But she claims that I approached her one day and asked to be enrolled in dance lessons. She remembers that day well because she was utterly shocked by my wish. I’m grateful for her willingness to see what happened with that first class. Who knows how different my life would be if she had declined.

Nineteen years, and many Nutcrackers later, here I am. Being a dancer for that many years taught me important life lessons regarding personal discipline, body image, receiving harsh corrections and how to be competitive in a healthy way.

Looking back, I see the dance world akin to a weird microcosm of life itself. Even though some say that dancers have no life, that’s not exactly true.

Yes, we sacrificed a lot of things that “normal teenagers” do, but it didn’t seem to matter to those of us who didn’t feel like a “normal teenager” anyway.

Our lives consisted of bobby pins and hairspray, dance classes and rehearsals, auditions and performances, sewing pointe shoes and Epsom salt soaks. School, homework, grades and sleep, those were secondary, though we weren’t exactly slackers in that area either.

The point of me painting this picture is so that you can see what I mean when I say that I know a thing or two about the physical body and how to communicate with it. Actually, it’s hard to imagine otherwise. Play a track from the Nutcracker and I might roll my eyes but my body will know exactly what choreography to embody with that tune.melissa_2

Conversely, when we get stuck in our heads and lose touch with our physical body and our environment, we become listless and anxious. I know this place well because I’ve been there too.

It was in my early 20’s when I started prioritizing my life differently. My thoughts got cluttered with things like, “What am I doing with my life?” “What do I want to be when I grow up?” “How do I navigate this sea of limitless possibilities when I have no idea what I want to do with my life and why do I even have to make a decision now and why does everyone else my age seem to have it all figured out?!”

Eventually, I got so overwhelmed playing the game of career, school, rent, money, love life, and the like that the ‘think-think-think,’ ‘worry-worry-worry’ cycle-of-death started to consume my mind.

At worst, I was paralyzed and I had no idea who I was. At best, I was just another zombie out in the real world doing the daily grind. In a desperate attempt to cope, I took on 4 part-time jobs so that I wouldn’t have a dull moment to make me face the truth of my life. Instead, I was just going to numbly work myself to death.

Luckily for you, I’m still alive and my life is radically different. Because I was able to turn my life around, I know that the same powerful transformation that can occur within any of us.

You just have to want it.

So what do you do when you feel completely out of touch with your body and you walk around in circles in your head until you are stuck and lost?

1)  Come back into this moment. If you notice that you have disappeared into another realm, that’s a good sign. Noticing things makes it so much easier to do something about it. Say, “Thank you, Me, for noticing” and then bring your awareness back to the here and now.

Look around you. Notice your breathing. What’s happening right now? Get back in communication with your present environment. Where attention goes, energy flows, right? And we really love when the energy flows through your body, radiating outwards.

Here’s my action step for you: Take a moment right now. Close your eyes and try to feel every single cell in your body. Just BE there. Be IN your body. Feel your feet firmly planted on the ground, your butt on the chair. Breathe….

2) Communication cycle. Not just for dealing with other people. Strengthen the communication lines between you and your body. When was the last time you listened to something your body was telling you? For effective communication, there must be equal amounts of inflow and outflow. Communication you send and communication you receive.

Action step: See how that can be applied to you and your body. Has it usually been a one-way street? What would it take to turn that into a loving and open full cycle of communication?

3) Shake it off. Move that gorgeous body! Do whatever you have to do to gift yourself time to wiggle. This can look like a 5-minute dance break to your favorite song, or a nice long walk in the park. Maybe it’s zumba, yoga, hula-hooping or jump-roping. Daily fitness does not have to be complicated or cost a gym membership. The only thing that is stopping you is yourself.

The regular exercise thing is so helpful for bonding with your bod, and here’s why: You get to practice your communication skills and you start to feel more safe, grounded, and secure in your body.

Action step: Choose an activity that lights you up inside. Something that sounds fun and exciting. Get creative! This is for YOU. Take a look at your daily habits and see where you can prioritize your ‘self-care body-moving’ date. Make it happen.

That’s it for today, folks! Thank you so much for your time and attention. I know that these easy-to-implement tips can make a big difference in your life. In order to ensure that you’re supported and successful, I want to offer you my personal attention because I genuinely care. I want to encourage you to actually write to me and tell me how it’s going. What was it like to do all those action steps? Do you have any questions? Did you get stuck on something? I would love to know. Leave me a comment below or send me a direct email at
